Car accidents can happen in a matter of seconds — yet their impact often lingers for weeks, months, or even years. Even after the physical injuries start to heal, you might notice your mind hasn’t quite caught up. You may find yourself replaying the moment of impact, tensing up when you hear brakes, or feeling anxious when it’s time to drive again.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone — and support is available.
At Mind Matters Counselling, our therapists are ICBC-approved and experienced in helping clients heal from the emotional and psychological effects of motor vehicle accidents.
The Emotional Aftermath of a Car Accident
After an accident, many people expect physical pain — but are surprised by how emotionally disrupted they feel. It’s common to experience:
- Anxiety or panic while driving or being a passenger
- Irritability or emotional reactivity
- Trouble sleeping or recurring nightmares
- Flashbacks or intrusive thoughts
- Physical tension, headaches, or body pain linked to stress
- Avoiding driving altogether
These are normal trauma responses. Your brain and body are trying to make sense of what happened and prevent it from happening again. Counselling helps you regulate these responses so you can feel safe again — in your body and in your life.
How ICBC Counselling Works
If you’ve been in a car accident in British Columbia, you’re eligible for counselling covered by ICBC. Here’s what that means for you:
- You’re automatically pre-approved for 12 counselling sessions within the first 12 weeks after your accident — no referral or pre-approval required.
- Your therapist bills ICBC directly, so you don’t pay anything out of pocket.
- If you need more sessions beyond the first 12, your counsellor can request an extension from ICBC on your behalf.
At Mind Matters Counselling, we handle all the billing and coordination so you can focus fully on your healing.
How Counselling Can Help You Recover

ICBC counselling is designed to help you address the emotional and physiological effects of trauma. In therapy, we focus on:
- Processing traumatic memories safely
Helping your nervous system release the “stuck” stress response that keeps you on high alert. - Rebuilding a sense of safety and control
Gradually reintroducing driving or daily activities in a supportive way. - Reducing anxiety and hypervigilance
Using tools to calm your mind and body when triggered. - Understanding the mind-body connection
Exploring how stress can amplify physical symptoms like pain or fatigue. - Reconnecting with confidence and calm
So you can return to routines that once felt effortless.
Our Therapeutic Approach
Our counsellors combine evidence-based and compassionate approaches, including:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): To reframe anxious or self-blaming thoughts.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): To help regulate emotions and strengthen relationships affected by trauma.
- Somatic and Mind-Body Work: To release stored tension and help you reconnect with your body’s sense of safety.
- Trauma-Informed and Culturally Sensitive Care: Especially important for clients from diverse backgrounds navigating recovery within cultural expectations or family dynamics.
We know that trauma doesn’t just live in the mind — it’s carried in the body. That’s why our sessions focus on both emotional and physical healing, helping you feel grounded and whole again.
What to Expect in Your Sessions
Your first session is about understanding what you’ve been through — physically, emotionally, and practically. We’ll talk about your accident, how you’ve been coping, and what you’d like to feel differently.
Each session is personalized, gentle, and collaborative. Some clients want to talk; others focus more on body awareness and grounding exercises. There’s no “right” way to heal — just your way.
We work at your pace and honour where you are in your recovery.
When to Reach Out
If you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident, you don’t need to wait until symptoms become overwhelming. Counselling can help you process the event early and prevent trauma from taking a deeper root.
Even if your accident happened months ago, you may still qualify for ICBC-funded therapy. We can help you check your eligibility and guide you through the process.
Healing Is More Than Physical
Recovery isn’t only about bones and muscles — it’s about feeling safe again in your body, your car, and your life.
